Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
