France will start stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
