Nearly 25,000 residences in southeastern Queensland found themselves experiencing outages on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms passed over the area, producing wind gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Large Hailstones and Widespread Destruction

Residents reported large ice chunks reaching sizes of 7 centimeters in particular locations. Meteorological experts verified that multiple regions across Queensland had been impacted by significant hail.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing power throughout the impacted areas, with nearly 70 crews working to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Southern State's Climate Difficulties

Meanwhile, nearly one thousand households in the southern state also experienced energy failures after Melbourne experienced its wettest day in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services responded to over five hundred emergency reports across the region, mostly for property damage but also for fallen timber and inundation.

At one point on yesterday, more than 28k electricity consumers in Victoria were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along much of eastern Queensland this week as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

The following day was expected to become the wettest day, with continued storm activity predicted across different parts of both regions.

Safety Concern

Public health experts warned that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the ongoing climate situation.

This caution comes after historical occurrences where comparable situations led to major medical consequences in the region.
