A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
